This book, which is a compiling of sermons by Charles Finney, an inspiring nineteenth century evangelist, pastor and theologian. Because so many lectures and sermons are compiled into this book, it is rather heavy reading about how to live a truly Christian life and what is necessary to have a growing and renewing faith, a revival of the Church and the individual. Rev. Finney pulls no punches. He doesn't sugar coat the commitment needed nor the behaviors and attitudes required to be a Christian.  Subjects such as prayer, faith, obedience to God, unity of behavior and instructions for proper conduct are covered, as well as how and why revivals are needed and may or may not succeed.

Some important points quoted and covered are: "You will never have access to the full power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you unless you completely confess your sins."   "You shall seek me when you search for me with all your heart." (Jer.29:13).  He reminds us that Jesus promised in the story of the unjust judge and the parable of the loaves that God will give answers to prayers when we pray with persistence.  Also that we can only be saved when we are not in rebellion against God, if we don't reject or resist Jesus or the Holy Spirit.  A quote that "Nothing is acceptable to God, including religion, unless it is performed heartily to please God."  He further states that we must strive to be obedient to God and must deny our selfish wants for Christ's sake, or we cannot be considered true Christians and God won't answer our prayers.  When the love of worldly things matter more to us than loving God and giving Him our all, we cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit.  We should also expect to face the opposition of Satan when we do become filled with the Holy Spirit of God. By following the example of Jesus, we will be able to resist Satan and attain inner peace and calmness and live lives that are useful and true to God. There is so much good practical advice and knowledge given in this book that it should be required reading for anyone who wants to become a Christian or renew his/her faith.
